GPS data from around 1,000 cats across ten countries reveals a hidden cat world - from quiet corners close to home to neighbourhoods that never sleep.

Paris, August 2026. Cats are famously mysterious creatures – but where do they actually go when they’re outside, and what determines how far they roam? To find out, Weenect, one of Europe’s leading GPS tracking brands for pets, analysed anonymised GPS data from around 1,000 cats* across ten countries for its largest GPS Cat Territory Analysis to date. Around 100 randomly selected cats were included per country (DE, AT, CH, FR, IT, ES, GB, NL, BE, US) and tracked continuously over a four-week period. In total, the study captured more than 24,000 daily records, creating one of the most detailed snapshots yet of how outdoor cats really live.
The findings challenge the assumption that neutering is the main factor influencing how far cats roam. Instead, the study shows that sex and – especially – where a cat lives and who it lives with play a much greater role in shaping territory size, daily activity, and night-time behaviour.
Non-neutered males cover only around 10% more ground (by median) than neutered males – a much smaller difference than the "intact male" reputation suggests. The difference between male and female cats is much stronger: neutered males still cover around 59% more ground than neutered females and go out nearly twice as often.
For female cats, though, the picture is far less clear: only 16 non-neutered females were tracked long enough across the whole study to be included in the analysis - too few to draw a reliable conclusion. This small number also reflects a wider recommendation: many animal welfare organisations, and some municipalities, advise - or even require - that female cats only be allowed outdoors once neutered, given the far higher risk of an unplanned litter.
Male and female cats follow different roaming styles, but both remain strongly connected to home. A typical female cat uses a territory of around 10,700 m² - about one and a half football pitches. A typical male cat covers roughly 20,000 m² - nearly twice as much. He also goes out more often (around 2 times a day compared with 1.2) and is more likely to be active at night. Yet both follow the same basic pattern: they explore familiar areas and return home - he just takes the longer route.
Since every cat in the study already had outdoor access, it is not surprising that some were active at night too. What stands out is how strongly nighttime behaviour varies across countries.
UK cats sit in the lower half of the range: at 67%, they rank third-lowest of the ten countries, just above Italy (64%) and Austria (63%). By contrast, every cat tracked in the US was recorded outside at least once during the night, making it the most consistently nocturnal population in the study.
These differences are unlikely to be explained by instinct alone. They also reflect the environments cats live in and the degree of nighttime freedom owners provide.
In the UK, almost half of the tracked cats lived in urban areas, and urban cats in the study tended to roam less – with territories around 30-40% smaller than those of suburban and rural cats, likely due to higher cat density and more limited space. The findings suggest that where cats live shapes not only how far they roam, but also when they choose to explore.
With a median roaming territory of 10,851 m², UK cats had one of the smallest territories in the study, only marginally larger than Italy's (10,754 m²). UK cats also travelled a median of 749 m per day and made 1.23 outings per day, placing them among the less mobile cat populations studied and closer to cats in Spain (547 m/day; 1.03 outings) and France (575 m/day; 1.00 outings) than to the more wide-ranging cats observed in countries such as Switzerland and Germany.
Overall, UK cats displayed the most home-centred roaming pattern observed in the study, combining the second-smallest roaming territories with the second-highest proportion of time spent at home, alongside relatively few daily outings and low nocturnal activity.
A cat with a far bigger territory than its owner might expect, or one that is more active at night than expected, is exactly the kind of behaviour that's easy to miss without a way to see it.
