In this first section of Weenect Insiders, you'll find details of the various monthly activities we've put together to both entertain and inform you. On the menu this month: an article about inspiring women and their special companions in honour of International Women's Day, and an episode about how animal shelters find the animals they take in.
"Behind every great man there's a great woman," and behind every great woman there's a furry companion!
We are surrounded by exceptional women whom we adore for their strength, their determination, their talent and their love. Whether they are celebrities, family members or complete strangers, let's mark International Women's Day by showing them how proud we are of them and how much we recognise them. Some of these great women have not fought this fight alone and have carried their love for animals with them throughout their lives. Today, let’s discover three famous women whose impact has also touched the lives of animals.
French author Colette had a strong affinity for animals and was always surrounded by cats. No matter where she lived, she had cats with her, whether it was Kamaralzaman, la Noire, Jeune Bleue, Chatte grise or Beau Garçon. Colette also used them as models for the cats featured in her books. She had a strong attachment to dogs too, especially her French bulldog Souci.
Over the course of her life, Helen Keller owned various breeds of dogs, both large and small. She had Great Danes, a German shepherd, a dachshund and a Lakeland terrier, to name just a few examples.
But it's perhaps with the Akita, a loyal and muscular breed of Japanese origin, that she was most strongly associated. When Keller visited Japan in 1930, she heard the story of a loyal Akita named Hachiko. She went on to be given one named Kamikaze-Go as a gift, but the puppy unfortunately died shortly after Keller returned to the United States. The death of the dog broke her heart. On hearing the news, the Japanese government sent her the puppy's little brother Kenzan-Go, or Go-Go for short. Go-Go went on to lead a rich and full life.
Keller helped introduce the Akita breed, which she referred to as “angels in fur", to the United States.
Queen Elizabeth II first discovered corgis in 1933 at the age of seven when her father, the future King George VI, bought one from a local kennels for her, which they subsequently named Dookie. Corgis are often to be seen by her side when she's out and about on her daily activities, and this includes on the official website of the British monarchy. The breed has become a star on social networks and is inseparable from the image of the Queen and the British royal palace. Her dogs have also featured in official portraits, such as the one taken for her 90th birthday. And they all live pampered lives… royally so!
As experts in the world of animals, we've decided to work together with various organisations in the sector to give you a behind-the-scenes insight into everything they do. Let's continue our series on the Sans Collier ASBL animal shelter in Charleroi, Belgium by discovering how they go about collecting the animals they take in.
